Kosovo’s Model Courts to celebrate European Justice Day

With the support of USAID Justice Support Program, the Consortium of Model Courts of the Republic of Kosovo has arranged a nation-wide Open Court Initiative in honor of European Justice Day. Observed on October 25, European Justice Day aims to bring justice closer to Kosovar citizens, and to educate the public about the rights and responsibilities of citizens to access, respect and demand justice.

Through the Open Court Initiative, Model Courts throughout the country are hosting primary schools, high schools and universities for student-led mock trials and court tours. Each court will celebrate in a unique way, for example:

  • Peja District Court’s public information and records management offices will be run by high-school students in partnership with court employees;
  • Municipal Courts in Gjakova and Skenderaj will visit village primary skills to distribute coloring books about law;
  • Gjilan and Prizren Municipal Courts will host university students and engage local media to cover tours of newly renovated courthouse facilities.
  • Newly appointed District Court Presiding Judges will conduct interviews and court tours with local media.

European Justice Day is a special opportunity for Kosovo’s citizens to reflect on the importance of the Rule of Law for progress toward a future in the European community. Activities to be held throughout the country will provide a chance for citizens to consider our responsibilities in a democratic society such as the duty to be informed of government and community affairs; to obey and respect the law; to support law enforcement; to respect the rights of other citizens; to honor obligations to pay bills, loans and debts to persons and institutions; and to practice the principles of good citizenship in our homes, schools and workplaces.

Photographs from the Model Court “Open Court” initiatives will be posted on the Model Courts web portal at: www.courts-ks.org in the coming weeks.
