Model Courts Celebrate European Justice Day

Kosovo’s Model Courts held Open Court Days between October 22nd and October 29th in honor of European Justice Day, celebrated October 25 throughout the European Community.

In Kosovo, European Justice Day activities provided an opportunity for courts and citizens to reflect on the importance of the Rule of Law for Kosovo’s progress toward a future in the European community. Since December 2008, the Consortium of Model Courts has worked to achieve European standards in the areas of communications, public information, access and security.

Kosovo’s Model Courts have embraced European Justice Day as an opportunity to represent themselves and their work before the citizens they serve. With the support of USAID, Kosovo’s Model Courts held Open Days for citizens of all ages in order to build awareness, increase understanding and change attitudes concerning the system:

  • Court staff conducted tours for local media and the public.
  • Judges and prosecutors hosted primary schools students and distributed educational coloring books.
  • Middle school students and acted as judges and prosecutors in mock trials held in actual court rooms.áá
  • Courts established clinical legal education partnerships with Law Schools.á
  • Students shadowed court workers at public information desks and case intake windows.
  • Students distributed Know Your Court brochures in villages and enclaves outside city centers.

Throughout Europe, Open Court Days were held to honor European Justice Day.á The plenary session of European Justice Day was held by the Council of Europe in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Consortium of Model Courts of Kosovo was established by the Kosovo Judicial Council to test and implement best practices for the management of courts throughout the country beginning in 2008. Since its founding two years ago, the Consortium of Model Courts has become an influential policy advocacy forum and catalyst for improvements in the courts.

The Model Courts Program is made possible through the support of USAID from the American people. The program is implemented by the National Center for State Courts.

Each year, the best practices in the field of justice are recognized on European Justice Day through the Crystal Scale of Justice Awards ceremony held by the Council of Europe. This year, the Crystal Scale of Justice Award was awarded to the court in Yambol, Bulgaria, for its efforts to improve community understanding of the work of the court.
